12 Apr ABAYA LAGOS TAKES US TO ARABIAN NIGHTS AT ARISE FASHION WEEK 2018
Abaya Lagos closed the first segment on Day 1 of the Arise Fashion week with their dazzling AW2018 collection – ‘Cultured Arabica’. The line up portrayed the colours and vibrance of African and Arabian opulence and royalty, accentuated with turbans and sunshades. Walking to Arabian Trap Music music, the models stunned us in featured jeweled toned Arabian-inspired cosmopolitan designs – Oxblood, Magenta, Emerald, Violet, Rose, Gold and Bronze, balanced by neutrals like Camel, Grey and Black.
“Abaya” meaning “cloak” is the Arabic name for the traditional loose robe-like dress/over- garment worn by women, mostly in Muslim communities. The core focus of this type of clothing is modesty for women, which is what the founder – Salihat Adewunmi Rahaman wanted to showcase – Modesty in a way that is not only classy, but elegant and luxurious.
“Cultured Arabica” showed exquisite detailing in all its pieces in a way that gave vibrancy and uniqueness to otherwise day-to-day dressing. Each piece was unique and handmade, adding to the overall sophistication of the outfits.
The oxblood, kimono co-ord set had us feeling like Rich, Arab heiresses with the embellished cape. The real star of the night was a bridal silk abaya which looked like it was spun from gold, and the matching embroidered veil that transported us to Arabian nights.
The Abaya Lagos AW 2018 Collection is a beautiful collection with at least one piece that we think will appeal to every kind of woman, whether it’s the exaggerated sleeves, the sophisticated headwraps or the oversized sunshades.
