Back in the time of Gods and Mysteries: Chanel Resort 2018 show

For the last couple of years, Karl Lagerfeld was travelling all over the word demonstrating his new fashion collection. But this year, famous designer returned in Galerie Courbe in Grand Palais in the heart of Paris with his new collection ‘The Modernity of Antiquity’.

Although Lagerfeld’s latest ready-to-wear collections saw motifs from futurism and space, resort collection 2018 is marked by ancient civilisations’ style interpreted in main Chanel features. Ancient Greek chitons, Roman sandals, prints from ancient Egypt, golden accessories – the collection has it all.

It was quite easy to predict that the decorations for the show will be ancient Greek ruins, as Lagerfeld likes to keep all things in theme, from clothing to background. Therefore, lucky visitors of the show were placed in between the huge 11 columns.

Traditionally, resort collections travel to Greece for presentation, but this year French Grand Palais decided to support Mayor of Paris plan for local tourism improvement, hence, the collection will stay in Galerie Courbe to attract fashion fans and critics.

It is all very inspiring, however there is a question, how does ancient Greece links to the Grand Palais and Chanel herself?

The answer is very easy, Coco has a wide collection of statues, one of these is a Greek statue ‘goddess of Venus’ made in the first century AD. The original statue is kept in the designer’s apartments in Rue Cambon. The copy of it was specially made for the show.

The collection itself showcased 85 appearances, all of them were neither fresh nor surprising. Creamy colours, pleating and gold – traditional Greek outlook from the mosaic pictures in the museums.

Gladiatorial sandals are of course a brilliant designer’s choice, as they made literary any look, even the most old-fashioned, very actual and modern. The ornaments from the ancient Greek vases went straight on the clothes of models.

Regarding the accessories, the collection contains Lagerfeld’s favourite biker gloves, beads and well-known Gabrielle bag.

Finally, the collection had variety swimsuits to offer, as otherwise it won’t be called resort collection. Fans of the famous label were excited – creamy swimsuits combined with long cloaks transformed models into the ancient statues.
