The GTBank fashion weekend began on Saturday, 10th of November and while we cannot say that we’ve seen all of Africa’s finest, they were truly and well represented. Opening the show with a sensational performance by a troupe of female dancers clad in the typical Fela afro-vibe regalia peculiar to Fela’s infamous women, Ituen Basi delivered her signature eclectic style with charm and feminine sass.  The collection, “27” was inspired by Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s 27 wives. The prevalent theme was radicalism and artistic expression and Ituen delivered in fine style. Her signature mural patterns featured in most of the pieces in bold colors, her models all sported mesh net shower caps, lace stockings and brown Converse shoes commonly known as ‘All-Stars’.

“Our focus is all things Nigerian” she said of this collection in an interview prior to the show. This came through in the eclectic fusion of designs in her very colorful collection, very reminiscent of Nigeria’s varied style. Tassels, ruffles, tulle and layers were vibrantly matched in playful dresses, lacy jumpsuits and jackets, palazzo pants, her signature ‘oleku’ style and pinafores. Models wore t-shirts with the words “Jaga jaga” “Scatter Scatter” , “Not For Sale” inscribed, a matching nuance with Fela’s music playing in the background. Her collection was a beautiful tribute to Nigerian pop culture with a modern, artistic and fun twist. Pure fashion genius!
