Pop-star and entrepreneur Rihanna is reportedly set to launch a luxury house under her own name in collaboration with world-leading luxury conglomerate LVMH. In what is proposed to be an ultimate power move, Rihanna will be making history as the first black female to head up a fashion brand at the highly reputable LVMH, a major win for diversity in the fashion industry. Also, it would be the first new fashion house by the LVMH group (owners of Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Givenchy) since Christian Lacroix in 1987.

Rihanna has no formal fashion training but is certainly not a newcomer on the fashion terrain. With a handful of fashion collaborations under her belt since her debut collection with River Island in 2013, the singer has carved a niche for herself and is clearly a force to be reckoned with in the fashion and beauty industry. With her Savage x Fenty range and Fenty Beauty, inclusivity and diversity in fashion have become recognized hallmarks on and off the runway, creating a haven for women of all shapes and sizes and amassing huge success and acclaim while at it. Not to mention her exemplary style that earns many appraisals from her 67 million Instagram followers also known as the “Rihanna Navy”. Sending her throng of followers into a frenzy after she was seen in a pair of oversized statement sunglasses that had “Fenty” inscribed on the sides, speculations have been made as to whether her LVMH  collaboration will be a solo sunglasses collection or a full-blown accessory line.

LVMH, on the other hand, seems to recognize that Rihanna will prove a formidable asset to their brand as they have had previous successful projects together in the recent past. She worked on a capsule collection of sunglasses in 2015 for LVMH’s Dior and in 2017, had collaboration with the luxury group on her make-up line, Fenty Beauty. The range, which was praised for encompassing a wide range of skin tones, reportedly made $100m in sales within 40 days and was named as one of Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions that year. Having garnered multiple wins and strides since then on her own, their collaboration will prove to be a rewarding one has both brands have the means and repute to create a successful collaboration as well as a winning strategy.

In more ways than one, Rihanna’s appointment will serve as a very significant step in modern fashion. Last year, she became the first black woman to be on the September cover, traditionally the largest and most important edition of the magazine, of British Vogue. This collaboration will place her among the new slew of creative originals such as Virgil Abloh, who are making a difference in fashion with their originality and refreshing approach. Also, this will score a major triumph for her recurring theme of diversity, placing her in a higher capacity to affect change on a wider, more impactful scale.



This much-anticipated collection is due to be released sometime in the year and will involve very close work with appointed LVMH brands, including Louis Vuitton and Celine, along with Rihanna’s own Fenty team. The collection is likely to include leather goods and accessories and heavy doses of fashion haute in typical Rihanna fashion. We simply cannot wait for what’s in store, this year is proving to be the most interesting fashion year yet!
