29 Sep WHY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT OFF WHITE’S NEW “METEOR” BAG
Coming right on the heels of the much talked about Jacquemus It bag, Off White’s new sensation, the “Meteor” Bag is everything outrageous! Intentionally unfunctional,Off-White’s new top-handle purse comes with giant holes punched straight through the leather, as if hit by a perfectly-round meteor. The holes are slightly askew so you can slide your hands through and carry the bag like a clutch, but anything you might put inside—an iPhone, a card case, lip balm, headphones—would instantly fall out. In fact, in a release, the brand explicitly says the bag is “unfunctional.”
The Meteor retails for $1,665. It’s coming on the heels of Off-White’s popular Jitney bag, which looks nearly identical to the Meteor but without the holes.
The Meteor made its debut at Off-White’s Spring 2020 show, where Abloh revealed an entire collection inspired by the phenomenon of a meteor shower.
Ahead of the show, he shot an arty campaign for the bag with Ana Gimeno Brugada, Carla Sozzani, Patricia Urquiola, and Karla Otto (whose eponymous public relations company represents Off-White). Abloh says he chose these women—creatives types known mostly within the industry, and notably not 20-year-old models—for their “contributions to the realms of art, design, and culture in the Milanese society.” The release adds: “Each muse styles the Meteor in her own way, extending [her] own superior style to this new classic.” Abloh says he also hopes an underlying message of power and strength will come across: “Under the guise of ‘womenswear,’ the Meteor bag brings to [life] the notion of a strong spirit, [something that is] able to withstand natural disasters and take on a life of its own.”
The bag will be available beginning this Sunday, September 29, at select retailers.
